My Thoughts: Nursery rhymes get a contemporary overhaul in this clever picture book for young readers. With an emphasis on kindness and emotional well-being, Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times takes familiar tales to a whole new place prompting children to think about the messages and meanings behind beloved characters and their often doom-filled destinies. After each reconsidered nursery rhyme, readers find a set of emojis that prompts them to consider how they feel about the story. In addition, relevant questions tied to the text lead to discussions about emotions and kindness.
My favourite example would be Humpty Dumpty’s revised demise! Contrary to what we learned in the original version of the story, Humpty Dumpty had caring friends who came to the rescue after the accident. This version of the story teaches a lovely lesson about compassion and what it means to be a good friend. For a preview of the book, see the musical version of this story on YouTube.
Overall, this short collection of nursery rhymes reimagined gives readers a new way to think about these familiar stories. Well-suited for preschoolers.

Meet the Author:

Pam has been an early childhood music educator for over twenty-five years with a passion for singing, rhyming, reading stories, and making music with preschoolers.

When Pam noticed that some children seemed unfamiliar with traditional nursery rhymes, and that parents and teachers were avoiding them because of their outdated, dark, and inappropriate nature, she set out to modernize them. Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times® provides a memorable way to build language, musicality, and literacy through songs, stories and rhymes that nurture kindness, empathy, and gratitude. The inclusion of resources that support social and emotional learning (SEL) make it easy for parents and teachers to engage with the children they love.

Aside from making music with young children, Pam loves dogs and dark chocolate. She lives in New York with her husband, and loves when her children, grandchildren, and granddogs come to visit!
