Book Blast + Giveaway: The Wondrous World of Violet Barnaby

The Wondrous World of Violet Barnaby

Violet Barnaby searches for the joy in life after losing her mother in this sweet and funny follow-up to The Charming Life of Izzy Malone.

Violet Barnaby is a having a blue Christmas. She’s still grieving the loss of her mother, and to make things worse, her dad has just married Melanie Harmer, a.k.a. the meanest teacher at Dandelion Hollow Middle School. But on the day Violet and her dad are packing up and moving into the new house they’ll share with Melanie and Melanie’s two children, Violet finds a letter her mother wrote to her before she died, asking Violet to enjoy Christmas, along with a Christmas Wish List—things her mom wants her to do during the holiday season. On the list are exactly the kinds of things Violet doesn’t want to do this year, like Be Someone’s Secret Santa; Give Someone the Gift of Your Time: Volunteer; and Bake Christmas Cookies.

Violet shows the letter to her friend Izzy’s Aunt Mildred, who calls a meeting of the Charm Girls, a club Izzy and Violet belong to along with their friends, Daisy and Sophia. Aunt Mildred decides she will give them each a charm to put on their bracelet if they do all of the tasks on the Christmas Wish List, which Violet is not too happy about. She’d rather forget about the list completely, but feels compelled to honor her mother’s wishes.

And when Izzy’s crush confides a big secret to Violet, Violet feels like she is stuck between her best friend and the boy who she just might have a crush on, too…

Children’s Book Week Giveaway Hop

I have a copy of The Foot Book by Dr. Suess that my mother read to me when I was four years old. Now I’m reading it to my own four year old. And, hopefully, he’ll read it to his child someday. That’s the magic of children’s books — they hold memories and feelings inside their covers for decades.

So I couldn’t pass up the chance to participate in the Children’s Book Week Giveaway Hop. My giveaway includes three children’s books about adventures, a topic that fascinated me throughout my childhood.

Obookne signed, paperback copy of Barney and Barry The Hitchhikers (chapter book) by Sharon Powers. In this clever book aimed a kids aged 7-10, two bickering barnacles, Barney and Barry, attach onto an unsuspecting sea turtle named Fletcher. The adventure takes the trio on a journey through the sea with a cast of memorable characters as Fletcher learns hope to cope with two uninvited hitchhikers.

WallyBoardBookCoverFINALOne signed, paperback copy of Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin (picture book) by Stephanie M. Ward (me!).  The rhyming tale of a penguin who doesn’t like the cold and leaves his home in Antarctica in search of warm weather. But when he arrives in the Galapagos Islands he discovers an amazing world filled with tap-dancing crabs, diving birds with bright blue feet and racing 100-year-old tortoises.

ThreeOne signed, hardcover copy of Three Little Shrimp (picture book) by J. Steven Spires. The charming tale of three shrimp who get separated from their troupe (yes, that’s what a group of shrimp are called) and narrowly avoid danger at every turn.

And it’s all packed up in a “Say Yes to New Adventures” Canvas Tote Bag with some fun extras including postcards and a bookmark!

Book Blitz + Giveaway: Nora & Kettle

I’ve heard so much about the new YA book, Nora & Kettle by Lauren Nicolle Taylor, and am so looking forward to reading it, that I jumped at the chance to participate in the book blast and giveaway coordinated by Xpresso Book Tours. If you have (or do) read it, I’d love to know your thoughts on the book, so please leave a comment.

Nora & Kettle
Lauren Nicolle Taylor
Published by: Clean Teen Publishing
Publication date: February 29, 2016
Genres: Historical, Young Adult

What if Peter Pan was a homeless kid just trying to survive, and Wendy flew away for a really good reason?

Seventeen-year-old Kettle has had his share of adversity. As an orphaned Japanese American struggling to make a life in the aftermath of an event in history not often referred to—the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and the removal of children from orphanages for having “one drop of Japanese blood in them”—things are finally looking up. He has his hideout in an abandoned subway tunnel, a job, and his gang of Lost Boys.

Desperate to run away, the world outside her oppressive brownstone calls to naïve, eighteen-year-old Nora—the privileged daughter of a controlling and violent civil rights lawyer who is building a compensation case for the interned Japanese Americans. But she is trapped, enduring abuse to protect her younger sister Frankie and wishing on the stars every night for things to change.

For months, they’ve lived side by side, their paths crossing yet never meeting. But when Nora is nearly killed and her sister taken away, their worlds collide as Kettle, grief stricken at the loss of a friend, angrily pulls Nora from her window.

In her honeyed eyes, Kettle sees sadness and suffering. In his, Nora sees the chance to take to the window and fly away.

Set in 1953, NORA AND KETTLE explores the collision of two teenagers facing extraordinary hardship. Their meeting is inevitable, devastating, and ultimately healing. Their stories, a collection of events, are each on their own harmless. But together, one after the other, they change the world.

Blog Tour + Giveaway: The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse by Gwyneth Jane Page

I’m always looking for great books that introduce children to different places around the world. So I was thrilled to be able to participate in the book review tour for two wonderful books in the Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse series coordinated by iRead Book Tours.

The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Canada

The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Canada (BOOK ONE):

PJ Mouse, an adorable little stuffed animal, was lost and alone until young Emily heard his cries for help. Now, along with his new family, PJ gets to travel the world-discovering exciting new places and people along the way!

Come join PJ on his first adventure across Canada as he hikes on a glacier in the Rockies, finds a salt lake in the prairies, and walks on the ocean floor in Nova Scotia.

My thoughts: In PJ Mouse’s very first adventure we meet this delightful little stuffed animal under a park bench. Fortunately, he is found by the lovely Emily who brings him along on family vacations. Our first destination? A drive across Canada! From well-known attractions like Niagara Falls to the stunning Butchart Gardens, PJ Mouse zigzags through incredible Canadian scenery and even learns a few words of French in Quebec. With a knack for getting into dangerous predicaments, PJ Mouse gives children unique experiences in each place and often meets a native animal friend. The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Canada is a wonderful book to introduce children to the concept of travel, experiencing new places and meeting new people. The lovely illustrations are colorful and perfectly compliment the story. I really enjoyed the story and learning tidbits about Canada as I traveled along with PJ. The perfect gift for any child who plans to visit Canada. Definitely recommended!

The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Queensland

The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Queensland (BOOK TWO):

PJ Mouse, an adorable little stuffed animal, was lost and alone until young Emily heard his cries for help. Now, along with his new family, PJ gets to travel the world – discovering exciting new places, people, and animals along the way!

Come join PJ on this, his second adventure, along the coast of Queensland, as he snorkels at the Great Barrier Reef, chats with a Loggerhead turtle in the midst of a great undertaking, and explores the tropical rainforest until he has to be rescued by one of the local friendly wildlife.

My thoughts: PJ Mouse, Emily and the family are off again, this time on vacation in Queensland, Australia. The second book in the series includes many of the same wonderful elements of the first book — charming artwork, meeting (and being saved by) native wildlife, visiting well-know sites (The Great Barrier Reef) and lesser known attractions (Mon Repos), and getting into lots of trouble. The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse in Queensland gives children a chance to visit an amazing area of Australia that doesn’t always get its fair share of publicity beyond The Great Barrier Reef. In addition to the fun story, I’m so impressed with the extras available for PJ fans including a passport, stickers and a stuffed version of PJ himself. The whole kit makes a lovely gift to inspire wanderlust in a child. Recommended! (P.S. I’ll be giving a copy of book two to my niece this Christmas.)
