Book Review + Giveaway: A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home

Title: A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home | Author & Illustrator: Nikki McClure | Genre: Picture Book | Publisher: Norton Young Readers (2026) | ISBN: 978-1324125105

Publisher’s Book Summary: Gorgeously handcrafted, rooted in the nature and landscape of the Northwest, and threaded with the experience of child- and parenthood, A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home is a rich and deeply felt meditation on the intimacy of home, the wonder of the world, and the magic of discovery.

My Thoughts: In this stunning picture book, the concept of home is explored through a sensory experience full of bold colors, atmosphere and emotion. Written in second person point of view, the lyrical text follows a child discovering the beauty of the surroundings that we call home. From the scent of trees to the warm smile of a loved one, readers begin to feel what home really is through every page turn. The artwork — a combination of paint, ink, washi paper and paper cutting — all in a limited color palette, is striking and wholly-unique.

Inspired by the Pacific Northwest, where I was born and raised, A Forest, A Family, A Harbor, A Home is a beautiful collection of images and words that remind us all what a home can be.
