Book Description: Have you ever wished you could go away on your parent’s business trip or hide in their suitcase to explore a new city all on your own? Well, Katie and Steven sure have! They wonder why they always have to stay home when Mommy or Daddy travel for work. Once their favorite yellow teddy, Tootsie, comes up with the idea to stow himself away for Daddy’s trip to Washington, DC, Katie and Steven realize that they’ll be able to travel along, too—but just not in the way they first imagine!

My Thoughts: In this adorable tale, Katie and Steven wish they could go along with their father on his upcoming business trip to Washington D.C. But since they can’t go, the children decide to send their beloved teddy bear, Tootsie, along for the trip tucked safely into Daddy’s suitcase. Each morning after Daddy leaves for the day, Tootsie embarks on an adventure. The story then becomes a child-friendly travel guide that takes children around the nation’s capital from the perspective of a young toy. When Tootsie comes home, he tells the children all about his adventures and Katie and Steven decide that “Traveling” Tootsie should accompany their parents on all of their trips.

As a blog that covers both writing and travel, I was looking forward to reading Traveling Tootsie and seeing how the author tackled the tricky issue of parents leaving for extended amounts of time for work travel. It can evoke both exciting, adventurous emotions as well as the nervousness and sadness of being left behind. As a parent who travels, I strive to leave my child with a sense of curiosity about where I am going — the various cultures I will experience, the different landscapes or architecture, the exotic foods, etc. Traveling Tootsie’s puts a fun spin on travel and allows children to join in the adventures of their parents’ travel in a positive, encouraging way!

Meet the Authors:

Kathy and Karen grew up in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Virginia as teenagers. They enjoyed many family vacations, which began their love of travel. They both reside in Virginia with their families and continue to instill a love of travel with their own children. This is their first children’s book written together, about a favorite childhood memory that they always wanted to share with others to enjoy. They hope to inspire a sense of adventure in you!
