Book Tour + Giveaway: Amal the Thirsty Gamal

Title: Amal the Thirsty Gamal: A Christmas Tale | Author: Robert Schorr | Genre: Picture Book | Publisher: Mascot | Publication Date: July 2021

Book Description: The charming tale told in Amal the Thirsty Gamal is for every young person who might be anxious about how they are viewed by those around them (and yes, camels care about that too!). For so long, our little hero has been hearing taunts and jeers and thinking negative things about himself, his looks, and especially his little hump. But—oh, brace yourselves! — because Wise Men are traveling with Amal’s special caravan, and when one of them speaks up around the campfire one night, everything changes for little Amal!

My Thoughts: Poor Amal doesn’t fit in with the other camels because he doesn’t have much of a hump at all. But when the wise men need help carrying their special gifts, Amal might be exactly the right camel for the job. In this total unique spin on the classic Christmas story, a young, self-conscious camel gets an opportunity to shine. Through the eyes of a lovable camel, children empathize with how hard it can be to love yourself when you are different. But how being their own unique selves makes them special. Written in a lyrical, poetic voice, the story of Amal is a longer picture book that includes some facts about camels weaved into the narrative. The watercolor illustrations use a wide range of colors from soft, sandy scenes to deep, jewel-tone evening landscapes. The story has a lovely message for children and is sure to prompt questions about camel’s humps and the gifts that the wise men brought the baby Jesus. A lovely picture book to share with the family, especially for the holidays. Celebrate Christmas in July with Amal the Thirsty Gamal.
