Book Description:

What is the meaning of Christmas? That’s what eight-year-old EJ wants to know. The other kids say it’s about getting toys‚ but is it, really?

One evening, EJ’s mother takes him to the Rockefeller Center to see the lighting of the most magical tree in the world, and EJ meets someone who teaches him what Christmas is truly all about.

My Thoughts:

In this charming Christmas story, a young boy considers the meaning of Christmas on an outing in New York. Confronted with the commercial side of the holiday, EJ becomes confused about what Christmas means to different people. Through a selfless act, he feels the Christmas spirit for all the right reasons.

In the iconic setting of Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center amidst the lighting of the famous Christmas tree, EJ experiences the dichotomy that we often feel Christmas time — the commercial rush for more and more gifts, decorations, food and stuff and the pull of finding meaning in the midst of the chaos. When he is faced with an opportunity to show kindness, EJ chooses to forgo the wish of a toy for himself in order to help someone less fortunate. With a loving, supportive family by his side, EJ experiences the true joy of the Christmas spirit as the story reminds us of what is really important. This is a lovely story with colorful, vintage-like illustrations that reminds us all of the simplicity at the heart of Christmas.
