My Thoughts: Dream It & Do It is a fascinating book for kids. In clever, easily digestible 2-3 page snippets, readers learn about a diverse selection of people who made their dreams come true. It’s just enough detail to entice young minds without boring them and includes helpful examples of how to take the next step.
Some of my favorite sections include:
- Dr. Seuss – Perhaps surprisingly, Ted Seuss Guisel wrote for many years and was rejected dozens of times before a publisher took a chance on his poems. I especially love that his parents wanted him to be a doctor. I wonder if his pen name is his way of appeasing them?
- Robby Novak, Kid President – YouTube sensation Robby Novak simply wanted to have some fun in the midst of the 2012 presidential election. His simple sincerity and focus was a breath of fresh air that resonated with many and teaches us all to be true to ourselves.
- Maryann Brandon – Ever wonder what is behind the two-hour movie you just watched? Thousands of hours of video footage for one thing. It’s the job of the film’s editor that is at the heart of the moving-making process and young readers will learn about this fascinating and under-appreciated role.
The suggestions at the end include easy ways to start working toward a dream — like keeping a notebook for drawings, using LEGOs to create architectural structures and trying out coding with The Wonder Workshop. Parents might also be inspired to think differently about their children’s interests and maybe even allow a bit of monster drawing or video game time when that is truly a child’s passion.
Sharp spent the bulk of her career in new product development—dreaming up intuitive ideas from how to kill bugs to new ice cream forms to hit grocery shelves. A self-proclaimed problem-solver, she loves to think about the things that the world needs and figuring out how to make those things come to life. “Knowing in high school what I wanted to do with my life set me up for the right path. I wanted the same for my child and searched for books to guide her, but came up short,” Sharp said. “That’s when I thought, ‘why not write the book for my child that she needs and that will also help others?”
