My Thoughts: What would you do if a (loudly honking) goose was stuck on your roof? In Sarah Sommer’s picture book, The Goose on the Roof, one little girl has to figure out how to solve that problem — with hilarious and heartfelt results.
This Goose on the Roof weaves a wonderfully unique problem together with a fun cast of characters and a determined protagonist. Every animal enlisted to help — from frog to dog, flea to feline — seems to get into the mix and unwinding the story is just as fun as winding it up. A palette of bright colors and clean, crisp illustrations draw young readers right into the story.
I especially loved when the little girl’s father comes to help. He doesn’t take over or solve the problem, but he’s there with her and his presence is sweet and caring. I also found the initial problem refreshing as we quickly learn that the goose doesn’t belong to the girl! The concept of taking ownership — not because it’s your fault, but because it’s the right thing to do — is a wonderful topic to address with young children.
The Goose on the Roof is a clever, rhyming picture book with a colorful cast of characters, lots of laugh-out-loud scenes and a wealth of conversation starters. This is a fun book to read and discuss over and over again.
