Book Review + Giveaway: Saving the Sun

Title: Saving the Sun | Author: Emma Pearl | Illustrator: Sara Ugolotti | Genre: Picture Book | Publisher: Page Street Kids | Release Date: September 19, 2023 | ISBN-13: 9781645679882

Book Description: After an especially sweltering day, the ocean sparkles and twinkles so invitingly that instead of slipping beneath the horizon, the sun plunges into the ocean itself.

When the sun sinks and loses its fire, Luna and Poppa’s yearly vacation on Summer Island suddenly goes dark. Luna knows the sun needs their help―the sky looks all wrong, and it’s neither day nor night! But it’s a big job to do all on their own.

To bring back daylight, they must think of creative solutions, seeking help from the local dolphins, monkeys, birds, and more. With the power of teamwork and imagination, can they find a way to return the sun to its rightful place, and set it ablaze once more?

This imaginative tale will enchant readers as Luna, Poppa, and their new friends of the sea, beach, and air rise to the challenge of fixing the sky once more and―literally―save the day.

My Thoughts: If you’ve ever watched the sun set over the ocean, the image of a bright ball of fire slipping into the cool blue ocean will take on a whole new meaning after reading Saving the Sun! In this highly-imaginative picture book for young readers, Luna and her dear grandfather, Poppa, set out to save the sun when it takes a dip in the sea. While they meet a plethora of wildlife and enlist the help of their new friends along the way, the sweet relationship between Luna and Poppa shines through in every detail from gentle words of encouragement to a comforting hand to hold. In heart-warming exchanges, Luna’s excitement and uncertainty is perfectly balanced by Poppa’s patience and wisdom. They are the perfect pair to take on the surreal situations that they find themselves facing.

Saving the Sun is the second book from the duo Emma Pearl and Sara Ugolotti, continuing Luna and Poppa’s magical adventures from Mending the Moon. The illustrations in both books are awash with vivid colors and loads of movement across the oceans and skies. Both would make wonderful additions to a child’s bookshelf.
