Book Review: Soso and the Kako Leaf

Title: Soso and The Kako Leaf | Author: Bella Disu |  Illustrator: Awele Emili | Genre: Picture Book | Publisher: Soso and The Kako Leaf | Publication Date: June 2022

Book Description: Follow the life of young Soso as she encounters mysteries and unearths traditions that have existed long before she was born. Be part of her adventures as she gains confidence, self-esteem, and an understanding of her deep cultural heritage.
My Thoughts: Soso is a young girl who has always felt different from others. She’s embarrassed by a mark on her skin and decides to hide it from others. But when she’s drawn into an alternate universe where everyone has the same mark and she is recognised as someone special in the community, Soso learns not only to accept herself but to be proud of who she is. Soso’s story is a unique combination of modern family dynamics and the importance of understanding your heritage. The format of the book is also unique — a large-sized picture book that is much longer than comparable, contemporary books and leads to a unique reading experience well-suited for a slightly older age group. Soso and the Kako Leaf is a wonderful jumping off point for discussions around celebrating differences, self-confidence and the importance of family and heritage. With bright, colourful illustrations, this is a fun, thought-provoking book to read as a family.
