Book Title: Battle of the Bullies | Author: Fenyx Blue | Category: YA Fiction (Ages 13-17) | Publisher: Wisdom Works, LLC | Release date: October 29, 2020
Book Description: Ebony, Eris, and Emani Robertson have been through so much more than most high school freshman. When they were younger, they survived a school shooting that killed their friends and left their oldest sister unable to speak. After giving home-schooling a try, they enroll in a promising new academy, hoping for the best. The Robertsons soon discover, however, that their new classmates are anything but kind. A mysterious group of bullies known as the Dimes rules the hallways and spreads fear everywhere they go. All three sisters end up being targets of the gang and have to find a way to defend themselves. The triplets couldn’t be more different, but their loyalty to each other and to their school never fails. Along with a diverse group of friends, the Robertsons do everything they can to uncover their identity of the Dimes and restore order to the school. As if their lives weren’t complicated enough, they also get sucked in to a much bigger game-discovering who was responsible for the attack on their old school. Can they bring down the Dimes and bring the murderer to justice, all while trying to make it through ninth grade?
My Thoughts: With a dramatic premise and a contemporary plot, Battle of the Bullies ratchets up high school drama to a whole new level. Ebony, Eris, and Emani are the new kids at school, but they aren’t naive and they are going to make their marks. If only they can steer clear of the Dimes, a notoriously nasty group of bullies that pick their targets and destroy them. In a true reflection of high school, there is a lot going on in this novel — from first loves and heartbreak to fast friends and betrayals. Refreshingly, parents and teachers play strong roles in the story, sometimes with shockingly atypical reactions, acknowledging the place that adults still play in teenagers’ lives. There are a lot of people to keep track of and, sometimes, it’s hard to keep the sisters straight, especially with the changing of perspectives through the story. But the pace is relentless, like young people’s lives, and the stakes keep rising until the climax. Tackling violence is schools is a challenge, but Battle of the Bullies does so with strong, optimistic characters that embrace life a refuse to take a back seat in conflict.
